Ohio
Part of Northwest Territory: July 13, 1787
Became state: March 1, 1803
Ohio was the target of the first trans-Appalachian railroad effort, so it has the longest railroad history west of the mountains. With excellent topography for road-building, excellent farm land, and large coal reserves, every county in the state has seen rail service at one time or another. Over 1,200 railroad incorporations are known from Ohio; certificates are known from almost half.
Standing sheaf of wheat and a similar-shaped group of 17 arrows. Cultivated fields in the Scioto River Valley beyond. Sun rises from behind Mount Logan in distance. A heavily imitated design due to the large number of railroads that incorporated in the state. |
