North Carolina

One of original colonies
Became state: November 21, 1789

Unlike most southern states, there is no terrible shortage of North Carolina companies to collect. That is not to say that they are all easy, because they are not. Pre-Civil War companies and dates are hard to find. Reconstruction-era state aid bonds are relatively plentiful, although they are generally sold in auctions without clear reference to their railroad involvement. Check the database for bonds listed under "North Carolina State of." Also see State Aid Bonds for a table that explains how to find such bonds in auctions.

Allegorical standing Liberty at left with staff and Liberty cap. To the right is seated Plenty with a cornucopia. Tiny ship in far distance. Many, many variations of this allegorical design appear on certificates and pre-1870s paper money.
