Maine

One of original colonies
Became state: March 15, 1820

This heavily-wooded state has seen significant logging railroad development, but few certificates from logging railroads are known because so few incorporated separate from logging companies. Known certificates from Maine are concentrated among the very large railroads such as the Maine Central and the Boston & Maine. Unlike the mining industry where a huge numbers of companies incorporated in this state with operations elsewhere, railroads do not seem to have followed suit. Moreover, being at the eastern "tip" of the country, comparitively few railroads passed through Maine, except for a few to and from Canada. While there are some very rare certificates from Maine, there are fortunately quite a few certificates to go around to specialists.
