California
Became state: September 9, 1850
Like many states, the number of collectors far outstrips the number of available certificate varieties. Over one-third of all known varieties come from four companies (Atlantic & Pacific Railroad, Market Street Railway, Southern Pacific Railroad, and Western Pacific Railroad) Many of the remaining certificate varieties are very hard to find. only a few certificates show the state seal.
The word Eureka ("I have found it") above the goddess Minerva seated with a shield and spear. Oddly tiny Grizzly bear in foreground. Miner works beyond. Ships in bay and mountains in distance. |
