Non-Railroad "Companies"

Club pass from Millersburg & Ohio Eastern Railroad I depend heavily upon contributors to add new railroad company names to the database. Those names come from hundreds of different sources. It is unavoidable that non-legitimate names will creep in from time to time.

Many new names come from published and well-researched references, of course. Many names also come from new certificates that appear in auctions both here and in Europe. Each year, probably 50 to 100 new names come from other kinds of railroad paper, including passes, tickets, invoices, timetables, brochures, and booklets.

Although the vast majority of names from those sources are legitimate, some are not. Perhaps the most deceptive 'bad company names' come from model railroad club membership cards. A huge number were made to resemble antique passes from passenger railroads. Many model railroad names are so close to legitimate railroad names that they are very hard to identify as clubs.

Pass for Georgian Bay LineEven more time-consuming are passes from bus operations. Many bus companies took over from streetcar predecessors and used streetcar name variants to bolster ridership during transitional periods.

Non-rail shipping companies have proven very problematic. Many issued passes to railroad company officers, making some of them among the most difficult to reject from the railroad name database.

The list below represents my most current knowledge of non-railroad "companies". All sound close - or even identical - to legitimate railroads. If you know of additional names, such as now-defunct model railroads, please contact me. Similarly, send an email if you can add a short note about any of these listings.
