Millionaire owner of Ames Old Colony Shovel Co and known as the King of Spades. Used by Lincoln to promote investment in transcontinental railroad. Invested over $1 million personal funds in Union Pacific. Involved with brother Oliver in many railroad investments. Heavily involved in Credit Mobilier scandal by making payoffs of Credit Mobilier stock to politicians. Ultimately exposed the practice, but was one of few casulties in the affair. |
