Inter-industry shipping companies
Thousands of service companies owned facilities that existed to transfer products between producers and buyers through one or more intermediary methods of transportation such as railroads, trucks, wagons, conveyors, ships, boats, and airplanes. To be listed in this catalog, companies MUST have direct and plainly clear connections to railroading. Company names MUST reflect or strongly imply those connections. Any company name that sounds like it belongs in an industry other than railroading is excluded.
Such companies include:
Dock companies | These are companies that existed to transfer products and freight between railroads and water carriers. They are considered part of the general shipping industry unless they included evidence of railroad involvement in their names. |
Express companies | These companies are included ONLY if they owned their own rolling stock AND are generally recognized among collectors as rail-related. Companies like Railway Express Agency are included. Companies like Wells Fargo and Adams Express are excluded. |
Stock yards | Companies dedicated to transferring livestock are considered part of the livestock industry unless they specifically operated rail lines and indicated such in their corporate names. |
Transfer companies | Transfer companies generally operated wagons or trucks to transfer goods to or from railroads. Such companies are included when evidence of rail involvement appears in their names. |
Wharf companies | These are companies that existed to transfer products and freight between railroads and water carriers. They are considered part of the general water shipping industry unless they included evidence of railroad involvement in their names. |
