Part of Northwest Territory: July 13, 1787
Became state: March 1, 1803
Ohio was the target of the first trans-Appalachian railroad
effort, so it has the longest railroad history west of the mountains.
With excellent topography for road-building, excellent farm land, and
large coal reserves, every county in the state has seen rail service at
one time or another. Over 400 companies that operated or incorporated
in Ohio are represented by certificates.

| Standing sheaf of wheat and a similar-shaped group
of 17 arrows. Cultivated fields in a river valley (Scioto River)
beyond. Sun rises from behind Mount Logan in distance. A heavily
imited design due to the large number of railroads that incorporated
in the state. |
