Collectible Stocks and Bonds from North American Railroads
by Terry Cox

Michigan

Became territory: January 11, 1805
Became state: January 26, 1837

Michigan is somewhat of an "average" state in that the number of rabid state specialists and the number of available certificates seems balanced. The extreme rarities tend to be the smaller operations located in the Upper Peninsula and the mining-related operations in the west. Like many other states, small, captive railroads were intrinsic to to the states logging operations, but they are poorly represented by certificates.

With the numerous design elements, the Michigan seal offers a wealth of vignette variations on stocks and bonds. The main element is a central shield with a frontiersman and gun on peninsula with the word Tuebor above. Below shield is state motto, Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam (If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look above you.) Left and right are standing elk and moose with the word Circumspice below. Eagle above shield with e pluribus unum above.
