Collectible Stocks and Bonds from North American Railroads
by Terry Cox

Iowa

Became territory: June 12, 1838
Became state: December 28, 1846

Several certificates are known from the years before the transcontinental railroad. The number vastly increased after it opened. This state was an important source of income for several large railroad companies. The important and early Mississippi & Missouri Railroad is the source of several important autographs.

The central element of the seal is a citizen soldier holding a large American flag. Behind him are agricultural symbols including a field of whear, a plow, and a sickle. A lead furnace also appears. Beyond is the steamer Iowa on the Mississippi River. Flying above is an eagle holding a ribbon that reads Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain.
